Garden Grove for Change

Who We Are & What We Do

We are a team of Garden Grove residents working to organize people and resources needed to demand equitable change for any and all members of our community.

Inspired by the 3,000 people who came out to march on Wednesday, June 3, 2020 in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, we began examining the ways in which our own city perpetuates the systems and ideologies that remain an obstacle to equity, especially for our Black community members.

Currently, our mission is to demand city budget revisions reallocating the overwhelming amount of funds from the Garden Grove Police Department. We demand that these funds are instead distributed to support local businesses, low- and middle-income families, healthcare services, and education. Please sign and share our petition.

Petition

Garden Grove High School alumna Natalie Martinez has started a petition to demand an Ethnic Studies requirement throughout the Garden Grove Unified School District. Support her, as well as current and former students of the GGUSD, in calling for this crucial step to quality education.

Did you know that the Garden Grove budget for 2020-2021 allocates over 50% of our General Fund to the police department alone?

Sign the petition below to demand redistribution of funds in the interest of ensuring a safer, brighter, equal, and more just community for our families and neighbors.

In summary...

WE CALL FOR THE CITY OF GARDEN GROVE TO RESPOND WITH THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS:

1. To immediately revise the FY 2020-21 Budget, which currently allocates $67 million to the police department, and amend any previously approved police raises for FY 2020-21 and FY 2021-22, which are estimated to cost $3.3 million.

2. To reallocate $30 million from the police budget and invest in community services.

3. To protect and expand our current investment in community-led health and safety strategies.

4. To prioritize structural police reform.
